You need your routing number — the combination of your transit number and institution number — to set up direct deposit for payroll or government benefits, authorize pre-authorized payments, or receive a wire transfer. This guide shows you exactly where to find it for every major Canadian bank.
Method 1: Look at the Bottom of a Personal Cheque
If you have a personal chequebook, your routing information is printed at the bottom in MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) font.
Reading the bottom of a Canadian cheque, left to right:
⑈ TTTTT ⑈ III ⑈ AAAAAAA
- TTTTT = your 5-digit transit (branch) number
- III = your 3-digit institution number
- AAAAAAA = your account number
The numbers in MICR font look slightly different from standard digits — they have a distinctive square, blocky appearance. The transit and institution numbers are enclosed by the ⑈ symbol.
To provide this for direct deposit: Institution number + transit number together form your routing reference, plus your account number.

Method 3: Call or Visit Your Branch
If you cannot access online banking and do not have cheques, call your bank’s customer service line or visit a branch in person with government-issued ID. Any bank representative can provide your transit and institution numbers.
Method 4: Check a Bank Statement
Your account number typically appears on paper or electronic bank statements. The transit and institution numbers are less commonly printed on statements — but if they are, they will appear in the account details section at the top of the statement.

Providing Your Information for Direct Deposit
For most employers and government agencies, you will either:
- Fill out a direct deposit form — enter your institution number, transit number, and account number in the designated fields
- Attach a void cheque — write “VOID” across a personal cheque and attach it; the recipient reads the numbers from the MICR line
If you do not have cheques, a direct deposit form downloaded from your bank’s app (PDF with your numbers pre-printed) is accepted by the CRA and most employers as a substitute.
