How Much Can I Earn While on CPP Disability Benefits?

Updated

The Core Earnings Rule

CPP disability is based on whether you are able to do substantially gainful work on a regular basis. The definition is not based on hours — it is based on earnings, with full context in the working while on CPP disability guide.

For 2026, the substantially gainful threshold is $1,577 per month.

Earning above this amount on a regular basis is interpreted as evidence that your disability no longer prevents substantially gainful employment — and your benefit may be stopped.

The 2026 Substantially Gainful Amount

YearMonthly substantially gainful amount
2022$1,394
2023$1,520
2024$1,546
2025$1,577
2026Indexed — check Service Canada for confirmed figure

This amount is indexed to the Year’s Maximum Pensionable Earnings (YMPE) and adjusted periodically.

Trial Work: The 3-Month Window

Service Canada allows CPP disability recipients to attempt a work trial for up to three months without triggering a reassessment.

After the trial period, if you are still working above the substantially gainful amount, a reassessment is typically triggered.

What Counts as Earnings for CPP Disability

Income typeCounts toward substantially gainful?
Employment wagesYes
Self-employment incomeYes — typically gross revenue attributed to your labour
Tips and commissionsYes
Passive dividends (investments)No
Rental income (passive)No
Rental income (active property management)Possibly — depends on level of work
CPP retirement or other pensionsNo
Support paymentsNo

What Happens if You Exceed the Limit

If Service Canada determines your earnings demonstrate you are capable of substantially gainful work:

  1. Your CPP disability benefit may be suspended.
  2. You receive a medical reassessment letter.
  3. You can provide written explanation and evidence that your condition still limits you.
  4. If discontinued, you have 90 days to appeal to the Social Security Tribunal.

Importantly, exceeding the limit in one or two months does not automatically end your benefit. The assessment looks at regularity and consistency of the higher earnings.

Reinstatement Provisions

If your benefit is stopped and your condition worsens again, you have a simplified reapplication path:

  • You may be eligible for automatic reinstatement if you reapply within 2 years of stopping CPP disability.
  • You do not need to re-establish the full contribution record again.
  • The medical evidence from your original claim may still be sufficient if the condition is the same.

Coordinating CPP Disability With Other Income

Other income sourceImpact on CPP disability
EI sickness benefitsCannot receive at same time as CPP disability — one cancels the other
Provincial disability (e.g., ODSP)Coordinated — provincial benefits are often reduced by CPP disability amount
Employer long-term disabilityOften offset — LTD policy may reduce payout by CPP disability amount
Canada Workers BenefitMay still be eligible for working income supplement
CPP retirement at 65CPP disability converts to CPP retirement automatically at 65

Reporting Requirements

You must notify Service Canada:

  • Before starting a work trial — do this in writing
  • If your medical condition changes
  • If you change jobs or your earnings change significantly
  • Every year via the ongoing eligibility review form they send

Failing to report work activity while on CPP disability can result in repayment demands for benefits received during unreported work periods.

Credits and benefits available to CPP disability recipients

Receiving CPP disability may qualify you for additional tax credits and benefits:

Credit/benefitNotes
Disability Tax Credit (DTC)Apply separately — if approved, unlocks disability amount (Line 31600), RDSP eligibility, and child disability benefit
Canada Caregiver CreditIf a family member cares for you, they may claim this credit
Medical expense tax creditSignificant medical expenses above 3% of net income are claimable
Attendant care deductionIf you require attendant care, those costs may be deductible on Line 21500
GST/HST creditCPP disability recipients with low income qualify
Canada Workers Benefit (disability supplement)If you have some earned income and an approved DTC, the CWB disability supplement may apply

Applying for the DTC separately: the DTC (Form T2201) has its own eligibility criteria. Being approved for CPP disability does not automatically approve you for the DTC — and vice versa. Both require separate applications to different federal departments. However, the medical evidence for CPP disability can be shared with CRA when applying for the DTC.
