Tip Calculator

Updated

A tip calculator helps you quickly determine the right tip amount based on your bill, preferred percentage, and how many people are splitting the check. Whether you are at a restaurant, salon, or bar, this tool takes the awkward mental math out of tipping.

How this tip calculator works

Enter your bill amount, select your tip percentage (or enter a custom amount), choose how many people are splitting the bill, and decide whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount. The calculator instantly shows the tip amount, total bill, and per-person cost. A quick reference table displays all common tip percentages at a glance.

Tipping on pre-tax vs post-tax

The tip should technically be calculated on the pre-tax amount — you are tipping for the service, not the government’s share. Here is how the difference works out:

Example: $100 dinner in Ontario (13% HST)

MethodBillTip Base15% TipTotal
Pre-tax tip$113.00$100.00$15.00$128.00
Post-tax tip$113.00$113.00$16.95$129.95

The difference is only $1.95 on a $100 bill. On larger bills, the gap widens, which is why some people prefer the pre-tax method, especially when sales tax is high.

Tipping culture in Canada vs other countries

Canada follows a North American tipping model similar to the United States, though tips tend to be slightly lower. Key differences around the world:

  • United States — 18-25% standard (higher than Canada), tipped workers earn below minimum wage in many states
  • United Kingdom — 10-15%, often included as a “service charge”
  • Australia — Not expected, 10% for exceptional service
  • Japan — Tipping is considered rude
  • France — Service is included (service compris), small tip of €1-2 optional

In Canada, unlike in the US, most provinces pay servers the full provincial minimum wage (not a reduced “tipped” wage), which is one reason tips tend to be slightly lower here.

Minimum wage for servers by province

ProvinceServer Minimum Wage (2026)General Minimum Wage
Ontario$17.20$17.20
British Columbia$17.85$17.85
Alberta$15.00$15.00
Quebec$15.75$15.75
Nova Scotia$15.20$15.20
Manitoba$15.80$15.80

Most provinces have eliminated the separate server minimum wage, meaning servers earn the same base minimum wage as all other workers.

How to handle tipping on group bills

  1. Ask for separate bills — The simplest approach; each person tips on their own items
  2. Split evenly — Divide the total (including tip) by the number of people
  3. Proportional split — Each person calculates their share based on what they ordered, then adds their individual tip
  4. Venmo/e-Transfer after — One person pays the full bill and others e-Transfer their share

If splitting evenly when orders vary significantly, the people who ordered less may prefer a proportional split. Our calculator handles even splits automatically.
