Frequently asked questions
How much can BC students borrow in student loans?
The integrated Canada-BC student loan maximum for full-time students is approximately $12,540/year ($1,046/month for a 12-month study period) from the combined federal + provincial programs. This is a ceiling — actual entitlement depends on assessed need, family income, assets, and other financial resources. Students with demonstrated higher need (independent students, students with dependants) may qualify for the maximum.
Do BC student loans charge interest?
Federal student loans (NSLSC component) are interest-free as of 2023 — a significant change that reduces repayment costs for graduates. The BC provincial component of student loans charges interest at prime rate after the end of studies (6-month grace period post-graduation). BC is working toward interest elimination on provincial loans as well; check StudentAidBC.ca for current policy.
What is the BC Loan Forgiveness Program?
BC offers loan forgiveness for eligible health care professionals (physicians, nurses, midwives, nurse practitioners, and others) who work in underserved communities in BC. Forgiveness is up to $4,000–$8,000/year of eligible BC student loan debt. Program details and eligible occupations change — see the BC Student Loan Forgiveness for Nurses and Nurse Practitioners program and related initiatives at studentaidbc.ca.
