RAP is the main relief program for Ontario student loans. It reduces payments based on income and family size.

RAP Stage 1: Affordable Payments

RAP Stage 2: Government Assistance

After 60 months on Stage 1:

  • Federal government pays interest on Canada Student Loan
  • Government pays toward principal reduction
  • You continue paying affordable amount (or $0)

Ontario-Specific Programs

Ontario Interest-Free Loans (Pre-2019)

For loans issued before 2019, Ontario charged interest. These older loans still accrue interest on the provincial portion.

Federal loans (Canada Student Loans) are interest-free as of April 2023.

Applying for RAP

Step 1: Create NSLSC Account

Step 2: Complete RAP Application

Step 3: Recertify Every 6 Months

You must reapply every 6 months to confirm continued eligibility.
