Scotiabank Interac e-Transfers follow the same standard limits as the other Big Five banks: $3,000 per transaction, $10,000 per day, and $30,000 per 30-day rolling period. These limits are set by Payments Canada and Interac, not Scotiabank independently, which is why the same limits appear across RBC, TD, and BMO.
Where Scotiabank differs slightly is the fee structure. Day to Day Banking clients pay $1.25 per e-Transfer — the same $1.25 per-transaction fee that applies to all transactions on that account. Preferred Package and Ultimate Package holders send e-Transfers for free as part of unlimited transactions.
E-Transfer Limits at a Glance
| Limit Type | Amount |
|---|---|
| Per transaction (outgoing) | $3,000 |
| Daily (outgoing) | $10,000 |
| 30-day rolling period (outgoing) | $30,000 |
| Per transaction (incoming) | No limit |
| Daily (incoming) | No limit |
E-Transfer Fees by Account
| Account | Outgoing e-Transfer Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Day to Day Banking | $1.25 each | Counts as 1 of the per-transaction charges |
| Basic Bank Account | $1.25 after 12 transactions | Free within the 12-transaction allotment |
| Preferred Package | $0 | Unlimited e-Transfers included |
| Ultimate Package | $0 | Unlimited e-Transfers included |
| Student Account | $0 | Unlimited e-Transfers included |
For Day to Day Banking clients, the per-e-Transfer fee means that sending one e-Transfer per day for a month costs roughly $38.75 — significantly more than simply upgrading to the Preferred Package at $16.95/month (or free with $4,000 balance). Any Day to Day client who sends more than 13 e-Transfers per month would save money by upgrading their account.
How Scotiabank E-Transfers Work
Sending an E-Transfer
- Log in to Scotia OnLine or the Scotiabank app
- Navigate to Transfers → Send Interac e-Transfer
- Select the account to send from
- Enter the recipient’s email address or Canadian mobile number
- Enter the amount (up to $3,000)
- Set a security question and answer (unless the recipient has Autodeposit registered)
- Confirm and send — the recipient receives a notification immediately
Receiving an E-Transfer
Incoming e-Transfers arrive via email or SMS notification. If you have Autodeposit registered, the funds are deposited automatically. Without Autodeposit, click the link in the notification, select your Scotiabank account, answer the security question, and accept. Receiving is always free regardless of account type.
Autodeposit
Autodeposit bypasses the accept/security question step. Register through Scotia OnLine or the Scotiabank app under Interac e-Transfer → Autodeposit Settings. Link your email address or phone number to your chosen Scotiabank account. Once registered, anyone who sends you an e-Transfer to that email or number will have it deposited immediately without the recipient needing to act.
Requesting a Higher E-Transfer Limit
The $3,000 per-transaction and $10,000/day limits are standard. If you regularly need to transfer larger amounts, call Scotiabank at 1-800-472-6842 to discuss a limit increase. Business clients and Ultimate Package holders with strong account history are most likely to receive higher limits.
For amounts that exceed e-Transfer limits entirely, consider:
| Alternative | Amount | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Scotia OnLine wire transfer | Up to ~$50,000/day | ~$25 domestic fee |
| In-branch wire transfer | Varies | Higher limits possible |
| Bank draft | Any amount | $7.50 fee; free with Ultimate Package |
