NBDB Review 2026 | National Bank Direct Brokerage — $0 Commissions

Updated

National Bank Direct Brokerage (NBDB) is National Bank’s self-directed investing platform and the most nationally competitive product in the bank’s lineup. It offers $0 commission on all Canadian and US stocks and ETFs — matching Wealthsimple Trade on price — while adding USD accounts, options trading, margin, and a full research environment that Wealthsimple does not provide.

For investors who regularly trade US equities or ETFs, NBDB’s USD account eliminates the 1.5% FX fee that Wealthsimple charges on every US transaction. On $50,000 of annual US trading, that difference is $750.

The USD Account Advantage Over Wealthsimple

Wealthsimple Trade converts CAD to USD (and back) on every US trade at a 1.5% spread. On $5,000 of US equity purchases, that is $75 per trade in currency costs. NBDB holds USD as a separate currency — convert once at the spot rate, then trade in USD indefinitely without further conversion fees.

Annual FX cost on $50,000 of US trades:

  • Wealthsimple Trade (1.5% on each trade): $750
  • NBDB (one-time conversion, then $0): minimal (spot rate conversion once)

Options Comparison at Low Volume

TradeNBDB CostQuestrade Cost
Buy 5 contracts$6.25 + $6.25 = $12.50$9.95 + $5.00 = $14.95
Buy 10 contracts$6.25 + $12.50 = $18.75$9.95 + $10.00 = $19.95
Buy 20 contracts$6.25 + $25.00 = $31.25$9.95 + $20.00 = $29.95

NBDB is cheaper for low-volume options (under ~16 contracts per trade). Questrade wins at high volume due to the lower per-contract cost ($1.00 vs $1.25).

Research and Platform

NBDB’s research environment includes real-time quotes, customisable charts, stock and ETF screeners, analyst reports, and economic data. This is a meaningful step up from Wealthsimple Trade’s basic interface and roughly on par with Questrade’s Edge platform.

For investors who want to research equities before buying — reviewing revenue trends, comparing valuation multiples, screening for dividend yield or sector — NBDB provides the tools without additional cost. Wealthsimple Trade requires going to a third-party site (TMX Money, Yahoo Finance) for most research.

Opening an NBDB Account

NBDB is available to all Canadians regardless of province. You do not need to hold a National Bank chequing account to open NBDB. The application is completed online at nbdb.ca.

To fund the account, link an external bank account via EFT or initiate a broker-to-broker transfer (RRSP or TFSA transfer from another institution). Broker transfers may take 5–10 business days.
