How Interac e-Transfer limits work in Canada

The $3,000 per transaction and $10,000 per day limits are set by Interac — the network that connects all Canadian financial institutions. No bank or credit union can raise these caps above the network maximum, though individual institutions may set lower internal limits.

These limits apply to outgoing transfers. For receiving, the cap is determined by the sender’s institution — if they can only send $3,000 per transaction, you receive no more than $3,000 regardless of your own account settings.

Common use cases and whether e-Transfer works

Use CaseTypical AmountWorks via e-Transfer?
Splitting expenses$20–$500✅ Yes
Rent payment$1,000–$2,500✅ Yes
Security deposit$2,000–$5,000⚠️ May need 2 transfers or EFT
Freelance invoice$5,000–$15,000❌ Use EFT or wire
Used vehicle$8,000–$25,000❌ Use EFT or bank draft
Real estate deposit$20,000–$50,000❌ Use bank draft (certified cheque)

For large real estate transactions, your lawyer or notary will require a certified cheque or bank draft — not an e-Transfer. Manulife Bank’s online banking allows EFT to linked external accounts for amounts above the daily limit.
