EQ Bank ATM Access 2026 | EQ Bank Card & Cash Withdrawal

Updated

EQ Bank does not operate its own ATM network. Cash withdrawals are available through the EQ Bank Card — a prepaid Mastercard — at third-party ATMs that accept Mastercard, but EQ Bank does not own, partner with, or surcharge-waive any ATM network. Third-party ATM operators charge their own fees, which EQ Bank does not reimburse.

This is EQ Bank’s most significant practical limitation for clients who regularly need cash. For most digitally comfortable Canadians who use cash infrequently, it is manageable. For regular cash users, pairing EQ Bank with a no-fee chequing account at Simplii (CIBC ATM access) or Tangerine (Scotiabank ATM access) is the standard workaround.

EQ Bank’s 0% FX fee on foreign ATM withdrawals is a genuine advantage when travelling — most Canadian debit cards charge 2.5–3.5% on top of the operator fee. However, the lack of a Canadian ATM network means domestic cash access relies entirely on third-party ATMs.

Practical Cash Strategies for EQ Bank Clients

Option 1: Use the EQ Bank Card at third-party ATMs

  • Accepted at any Mastercard-compatible ATM in Canada and internationally
  • EQ Bank charges no fee; the ATM operator may charge $1.50–$3.50
  • Suitable for infrequent cash needs where you can plan around the fee

Option 2: Maintain a secondary chequing account for ATM access

The most common setup among EQ Bank primary-account users:

Secondary AccountATM NetworkMonthly Fee
Simplii FinancialCIBC (3,400+ ATMs)$0
TangerineScotiabank (3,600+ ATMs)$0
BMO Everyday ChequingBMO (2,800+ ATMs)$4 (waivable at $1,000)

Keep a small spending buffer in the secondary chequing account and e-Transfer funds from EQ Bank Savings Plus as needed. Both Simplii and Tangerine charge no monthly fee, making this a zero-cost complement to EQ Bank for ATM access.

Option 3: Cash-back at point of sale Many Canadian grocery stores and retailers offer debit cash-back (typically up to $200) at no fee when you make a purchase. The EQ Bank Card is a prepaid Mastercard, not a debit card — cash-back availability depends on the merchant and terminal. Some merchants support Mastercard prepaid cash-back; many do not. Confirm before relying on this option.

International ATM Use with the EQ Bank Card

The EQ Bank Card’s 0% foreign transaction fee makes it one of the most cost-effective cards for international ATM withdrawals:

Fee TypeEQ Bank CardTypical Canadian Debit Card
EQ Bank FX markup0%N/A (debit cards vary)
Bank FX markupN/A2.5–3.5%
ATM operator feeCharged by ATMCharged by ATM
Daily withdrawal limit$500$1,000 (typical)

On a $500 international ATM withdrawal, the 0% EQ Bank FX fee saves approximately $12.50–$17.50 compared to a standard Canadian debit card with a 2.5–3.5% FX markup. Over a two-week international trip with $2,000 in ATM withdrawals, the saving is $50–$70.

The $500 daily limit is lower than most bank debit cards, which may require planning on days with large cash needs (e.g., paying for accommodation or tours in cash-preferred markets).
