CIBC’s institution number is 010. This three-digit code identifies CIBC on every Canadian electronic funds transfer and is the same for every CIBC branch and account in the country. Your complete routing number combines this institution number with your five-digit branch transit number — the transit number is what changes depending on which branch holds your account.
The routing number format used on Canadian cheques and most direct deposit forms is written as XXXXX-010 (transit number first, institution number second). For payroll systems and government forms that request a 9-digit number, the format is 0 + 010 + XXXXX — for example, transit 00002 becomes 001000002. Simplii Financial, which is a division of CIBC, uses the same institution number (010) but has its own distinct transit numbers.

How to Find Your CIBC Transit Number
The safest way to find your transit number is through your own online banking — branch transit numbers found in directories may not match your specific account, particularly for accounts opened online or transferred between branches.
CIBC Online Banking: Log in at cibc.com → select your account → click “Account Details.” Your transit number, institution number (010), and account number are displayed. You can also download a void cheque PDF from this page, which is accepted by most payroll departments.
CIBC Mobile App: Open the app → tap the account → tap the info icon or “Account Details.” The same three numbers are shown. A digital void cheque can be saved or shared directly from the app.
Paper cheque: The numbers along the bottom of a CIBC cheque read (left to right): cheque number, then transit number (5 digits), then institution number 010, then your account number (7–12 digits). These are printed in MICR font — the distinctive machine-readable characters at the bottom of the cheque.
CIBC branch: Any CIBC branch can print a void cheque or confirm your account routing information with government-issued photo ID.

These are transit numbers for selected branches. Always confirm your own transit number through online banking before submitting to payroll or CRA.

CIBC vs. Simplii Financial: Same Institution Number, Different Transit
Simplii Financial is a division of CIBC — not a separate bank — so both use institution number 010. The critical difference is that Simplii accounts have their own transit numbers that are separate from any CIBC branch transit number. Submitting a CIBC branch transit number on a Simplii account (or vice versa) will cause the transfer or deposit to fail or be misdirected.
| CIBC | Simplii Financial | |
|---|---|---|
| Institution number | 010 | 010 |
| Transit numbers | Branch-based (varies by location) | Account-based (find in Simplii Online Banking) |
| Physical branches | 1,000+ | None (uses CIBC ATMs) |
| Find transit number | CIBC Online Banking or app | Simplii Online Banking or app |
To find your Simplii transit number: log in to Simplii Online Banking → select the account → view Account Details. Simplii commonly uses transit 00002 for many of its accounts, but confirm your specific number before use. For CRA or payroll purposes: Simplii clients should specify “Simplii Financial” as the bank name (not CIBC), provide institution number 010, and use the Simplii transit number — not any CIBC branch transit number.
