CIBC’s mobile cheque deposit feature — called Snap & Deposit — allows you to photograph and deposit cheques through the CIBC mobile app without visiting a branch or ATM. The standard limits are $5,000 per cheque, $10,000 per day, and $50,000 per month for personal accounts in good standing.
Snap & Deposit supports Canadian dollar cheques only. USD cheques must be deposited at a CIBC branch in person. If you regularly receive USD cheques, the Smart Plus account includes a US dollar account feature as part of its bundle.
CIBC Mobile Deposit Limits
| Limit Type | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Per cheque | $5,000 | Single cheque maximum |
| Daily limit | $10,000 | Resets midnight ET |
| Monthly limit | $50,000 | Calendar month |
| USD cheques | Not supported | Branch deposit required |
| Fund availability | $100 immediate; remainder 4–7 days | Standard hold for personal accounts |
How to Use CIBC Snap & Deposit
- Open the CIBC mobile app and log in
- Tap Snap & Deposit from the main menu or account screen
- Select the account you want to deposit into
- Enter the cheque amount manually
- Endorse the back of the cheque: sign your name and write “For CIBC Snap & Deposit only” below your signature
- Photograph the front of the cheque — ensure all four corners are visible, the image is in focus, and there is no glare
- Photograph the back of the cheque
- Review the deposit details and submit
- Save the confirmation number and retain the physical cheque for 90 days
Common rejection reasons: blurry image, missing endorsement, cheque amount entered incorrectly, or cheque exceeds the limit. If the deposit is rejected, re-photograph in better lighting or deposit at a branch ATM.
Fund Availability Schedule
CIBC applies holds to mobile deposits as part of standard funds availability rules.
| Cheque Type | First $100 | Remainder |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Canadian bank cheque | Next business day | 4–7 business days |
| Government of Canada cheque | Next business day | Next business day |
| New account (< 90 days) | May be held longer | Up to 7 business days |
| Large amount (triggers review) | May be held longer | Varies |
If you need funds sooner, deposit at a CIBC ATM (hold still applies but branch relationships can sometimes expedite). For immediate-need situations, call CIBC at 1-800-465-2422 — in some cases a hold can be waived or shortened for established clients with a long account history.
Cheques Over $5,000
Cheques above the $5,000 mobile deposit limit must be deposited at:
- CIBC branch teller: No limit on amount; funds availability per standard hold schedule
- CIBC ATM (envelope deposit): Limit typically up to $10,000–$25,000 per deposit; envelope deposits processed next business day
- Certified cheques: Holds are shorter or waived; confirm with teller at deposit
For certified cheques and bank drafts, CIBC typically clears funds faster — a certified cheque from another Canadian chartered bank is usually available the next business day.
CIBC vs. Big Five Mobile Deposit Comparison
| Bank | Per Cheque Limit | Daily Limit | USD Cheques Mobile? |
|---|---|---|---|
| RBC | $5,000 | $10,000 | No |
| TD | $5,000 | $10,000 | No |
| Scotiabank | $5,000 | $10,000 | No |
| CIBC | $5,000 | $10,000 | No |
| BMO | $5,000 | $10,000 | No |
Mobile deposit limits are standardised across the Big Five at $5,000/$10,000. USD mobile deposit is not offered by any of the major Canadian banks — all require branch deposit for foreign currency cheques.
Simplii Financial: Mobile Deposit Without a Branch
Since Simplii Financial has no physical branches, mobile cheque deposit (and CIBC ATM envelope deposits) are the primary cheque deposit methods. Simplii’s Snap & Deposit works through the Simplii app with the same process and comparable limits to CIBC. For Simplii clients who regularly receive cheques, this is an important feature to understand before switching from a branch-based bank.
