How Long Does Direct Deposit Take in Canada? 2026 Guide

Updated

Direct deposit in Canada is fast — payroll deposits are almost always in your account the morning of your pay date. But the exact timing depends on your bank, your employer’s payroll processor, and the type of payment (payroll vs. government benefit).

Here is what to expect for each type of direct deposit.

Payroll Direct Deposit

When does payroll direct deposit arrive?

For most Canadians, payroll direct deposit is available by 9:00 a.m. on your scheduled pay date. Many banks process overnight deposits between midnight and 6:00 a.m., so funds are accessible before the business day begins.

Online banks such as EQ Bank and Tangerine often post deposits at 12:01 a.m. on the payment date — a minor advantage if you need funds at midnight.

How does payroll timing actually work?

Your employer doesn’t send money on your pay date — they submit a payment file to their payroll processor (ADP, Ceridian, etc.) 1–3 business days in advance. That processor sends a batch file to the banking system via the Automated Clearing Settlement System (ACSS). By the time your pay date arrives, the funds are already staged and released to your account when the bank processes its overnight batch.

This is why direct deposit arrives in the morning: it is not a real-time push on pay day, but a pre-scheduled release.

What about the first deposit from a new employer?

Expect at least one pay cycle delay. If you start a job mid-cycle and your banking information didn’t make the payroll cutoff, you will typically receive a paper cheque for your first pay, with direct deposit starting on the second.

Confirm with your HR team when your banking information is needed to be on file for first-cycle direct deposit.

CRA Direct Deposit Timing

Tax refunds

CRA processes most refunds within:

  • 2 weeks if you filed online (NETFILE) and have direct deposit set up
  • 8 weeks if you filed a paper return
  • 16+ weeks if you are a non-resident or filed a paper return from outside Canada

These are CRA’s own timelines. Once CRA issues the payment, it typically appears in your account 1–3 business days later.

You can check the status of your refund in CRA My Account under “Tax Returns” → “Refund status.”

GST/HST Credit

The GST/HST credit is paid quarterly:

  • January 3
  • April 4
  • July 4
  • October 3

(Dates shift to the next business day when they fall on a weekend or holiday.)

If you have direct deposit set up, the payment lands in your account on or within 1–2 business days of the scheduled date.

Canada Child Benefit (CCB)

CCB is paid on the 20th of each month (or the last business day before the 20th if it falls on a weekend or holiday). With direct deposit, funds typically arrive on that date.

Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS)

CPP and OAS are administered by Service Canada (separate from CRA). Payment dates for 2026:

MonthPayment Date
JanuaryJanuary 29, 2026
FebruaryFebruary 26, 2026
MarchMarch 27, 2026

With direct deposit, funds arrive on the payment date. Without direct deposit, cheques can take 5–10 business days to arrive by mail.

Why Is My Direct Deposit Late?

Common reasons payroll is late:

  • Pay date falls on a weekend or holiday and your employer scheduled the wrong direction (check your employment contract for their holiday payment policy)
  • New account: your banking information was not processed before the payroll file was submitted
  • Bank hold: your bank placed a temporary hold on a first deposit from a new payer

Common reasons CRA deposits are late:

  • Banking information on file is incorrect or outdated — update in CRA My Account at least 5 business days before the next payment date
  • You recently changed banking information — allow 5 business days for the update to take effect
  • The payment date falls on a weekend or holiday — CRA pays the previous business day, which may not be what you expected
  • Your account has been flagged or your identity needs to be verified — CRA will contact you by mail if this is the case

How to Check If a Deposit Is Coming

For payroll: Contact your employer’s HR or payroll department. They can confirm whether the payment was submitted and on what date.

For CRA payments: Log in to CRA My Account and check:

  • “Refund status” for tax refunds
  • “Benefits and credits” for scheduled CCB and GST/HST dates
  • “Direct deposit” to confirm the banking information on file is correct

For CPP/OAS: Log in to My Service Canada Account for payment history and next payment date.

Tips to Avoid Delayed Deposits

  1. Set up direct deposit before you need it. CRA suggests updating banking information at least 5 business days before a payment date.
  2. Provide a void cheque or official direct deposit form rather than hand-writing numbers — transcription errors are the most common cause of failed deposits.
  3. Notify every payer separately when you change banks. CRA, Service Canada, your employer, and any other payers each maintain their own records.
  4. Keep your old account open for 1–2 pay cycles after switching banks to catch any in-flight deposits.
